As part of the new ENCORE Scholarship Programme, our Performing Arts Scholars recently took part in Mastering the Monologue, led by OAKS alumnus Oliver Akers.
The session offered students the opportunity to explore character, performance and storytelling techniques whilst gaining valuable insight from someone who has followed a successful pathway in the performing arts since leaving school.
Working with individual monologues that will be performed at the forthcoming Scholars' Showcase, students received personalised feedback and guidance from Oliver, who encouraged them to think beyond simply learning lines and to consider the motivations, circumstances and relationships that shape a character's performance.
Oliver also introduced practical techniques designed to help students connect movement, voice and intention, giving scholars a deeper understanding of how a performance can be brought to life.
Having gone on to train at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Oliver was able to share his experiences of further study and the industry, offering students a valuable perspective on the opportunities available beyond school.
Oliver's Mastreclass highlighted the positive impact alumni can have by sharing their experiences and expertise with the next generation of AKS students. If you would like to get involved, please contact us on alumni@akslytham.com
