Gentlemen's Tea Brings Back Memories and Lasting Connections

Last week, we were delighted to welcome five former pupils back to school for a special Gentlemen's Tea, providing an opportunity to reconnect, share memories and reflect on the impact their school days had on their lives.

Joining us from King Edward's School were Stanley Kitt, Peter Melling and Nigel King, while Howard Henshaw and Michael Percy represented Arnold School.

The afternoon began with the gentlemen looking through copies of their school records, which proved to be a real highlight. They thoroughly enjoyed revisiting their academic results and reminiscing about their time at school, sharing stories about their grades, teachers and the paths they took after leaving education.

For two of our King Edward's alumni, the event was particularly memorable. Having not seen each other for more than 30 years, it was wonderful to see them reconnect, catch up and reflect on old memories together.

Over afternoon tea, the gentlemen shared fascinating insights into their lives and experiences, as well as the lasting influence that both King Edward's and Arnold School had on them. It was clear from the stories shared that their time at school helped shape their values, ambitions and future successes.

The group also offered some valuable advice for today's students. They encouraged young people to travel whenever possible, highlighting how experiencing different cultures and ways of life broadens horizons and provides a greater understanding of the world. They also stressed the importance of trusting your instincts and remaining curious throughout life, never losing the desire to learn and explore new opportunities.

The gentlemen were also pleased to learn more about how the schools have developed over the years. In particular, they were impressed by opportunities such as the PEAKS Programme, which equips students with valuable life skills including public speaking, enquiry and leadership. Many commented that these were opportunities they would have loved to have had during their own time at school. While much has changed, they were delighted to see that the core values and sense of community that defined their school experience remain as strong as ever, with even more opportunities now available to students.

The afternoon ended with alumni from both King Edward's School and Arnold School meeting new faces, sharing stories and discovering the many experiences they had in common. There was plenty of laughter as the group looked through historic school photographs, trying to spot themselves and familiar faces from their school days. It was wonderful to see friendships old and new flourish through conversation, shared memories and a collective appreciation for their time at school.

All in all, it was a fantastic afternoon and a reminder of the strong connections that continue to unite our alumni community. We are grateful to Stanley, Peter, Nigel, Howard and Michael for taking the time to return and share their memories with us.
