Handelsbanken presenting to Year 12 AKS students

At AKS, we are committed to equipping our students with not only academic excellence but also real-world knowledge that prepares them for life beyond the classroom. As part of our Sixth Form careers and enrichment programme, we were delighted to welcome professionals from Handelsbanken Fylde Coast to speak with our Year 12 students on Friday 2nd May.

Adam Short, Branch Manager, and Molly Birch, Private Banking Manager, provided students with an in-depth look into the world of banking and finance - covering everything from how banks operate to how they assess risk and support both personal and business customers.

Handelsbanken, recently recognised by Global Finance Magazine as Europe’s safest commercial bank in its 2024 rankings, shared valuable insights into their services including day-to-day banking, savings accounts, regulated mortgages and wealth and asset management. Adam explained how the bank evaluates both credit and financial crime risk, giving students a glimpse into the importance of security and trust in the financial sector.

A highlight of the session was Adam’s discussion on the power of compound interest, introducing students to the concept with a quote attributed to Albert Einstein:

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it… he who doesn’t… pays it.”

Molly led a detailed exploration of how financial institutions assess mortgage affordability, walking students through a real-life case study to explain the importance of understanding assets, liabilities, income, and expenditure. She also offered advice on managing personal finances and spoke candidly about career opportunities within the banking sector.

The session sparked thoughtful questions from students—particularly around investing early and the long-term impact of compound interest - as well as enquiries about potential work experience opportunities.

This session is just one of many ways we ensure that AKS students are exposed to meaningful, real-world experiences that enrich their learning and broaden their horizons.

A huge thank you to Adam and Molly from Handelsbanken for giving our students such a valuable and practical insight into the world of finance and banking.
