Fondly Remembered

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Newton Hogg on Wednesday 9th November 2022, aged 76.

George started at Arnold School in 1969 and was appointed by Oliver Wigmore, Headmaster, to join the English Department. He was much loved as an English teacher thanks to his enthusiasm, humour, creativity, and expertise for the subject. He became Head of Boarding and with his wife Dianne, and they led the boarders for 8 years. George then became Second Master and Vice Principal, where he was respected greatly by the whole school community for his compassion and wise counsel. Everything was done with a gentle smile and good humour.

George’s performances in the school pantomimes became a thing of legend. Dave Summerville and George became a much-loved slapstick comedy duo and hammed it up joyfully to packed audiences. George was also a member of the School Choir – he would regularly be heard humming his way around the school. Friday evenings would see George in the Sports Hall as part of the staff 5-aside football with his Newcastle United shirt on, putting the younger members of staff to shame with his deft touch.

The whole community at Arnold was a richer place for the 35 years George spent at the school until he retired in 2004 – he will always be remembered and much loved by pupils and staff alike.
