Fondly Remembered |
Warm tributes are being paid to Peter Bentley, former Senior Master and Head of Mathematics at Arnold School, who has died aged 88.
Peter dedicated nearly four decades of his life to Arnold School, joining in 1959 after graduating with a degree in Mathematics from Leeds University. His commitment to both academic and pastoral development marked him as a pioneering figure in the school’s history. In 1970, he became the first Master in charge of the Middle School, having played a key role in establishing the school’s pastoral system. He was later appointed Senior Master in 1981 by then Headmaster Richard Rhodes, a position in which he served with dedication until his retirement in 1996.
Peter’s contributions extended far beyond the classroom. He led rugby teams from U12 to U15 and was instrumental in introducing basketball to the school. He ran three school teams and served as secretary to Blackpool Schools’ Basketball Association. Even into his retirement, Peter remained a supportive presence at school sporting events.
Due to his love for the outdoors, Peter accompanied many Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme expeditions and school camps. He continued to accompany students on walking trips, including a memorable Glenridding trip with First Years in the summer before his retirement.
Into his retirement Peter maintained his love for walking in the fells and found joy in classical music. His connection to Arnold School remained strong through his active involvement in the Old Arnoldians’ committee, where he worked to preserve the school’s heritage and values. Peter's commitment continued beyond the 2012 merger with AKS, actively supporting the OA Committee as it transitioned to meeting at AKS in recent years.
Peter Bentley was a deeply respected figure whose legacy lives on in the countless students and colleagues he inspired. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his enthusiasm and above all his generosity of spirit.
Peter’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, 3rd June at 1:30pm at Carleton Crematorium. As a mark of respect, the flag at AKS Lytham will fly at half-mast in honour of Peter’s remarkable contribution to school life.
