AKS Lytham was proud to host the world-renowned Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) last month in what proved to be a memorable and competitive fixture for our First XI. But beyond the on-field action, the day held particular significance as we welcomed back Old Lidunian Anthony Pilkington, who returned to officiate the match as one of the umpires.
Joined by former Arnold and Kind Edward VII teacher Steve Godfrey, both Steve and Anthony are respected in cricketing circles, and Anthony’s return to AKS in a professional capacity is a testament to the strong, enduring connections between the school and its alumni.
Organised by Director of Cricket, Liam Castellas, the match itself was an excellent challenge for our First XI, who started strongly with a disciplined bowling display. Sharp fielding and tight lines kept MCC’s experienced batting line-up in check during the early overs. However, MCC’s depth and composure saw them finish their innings at an impressive 4/211.
In reply, AKS approached the run chase with confidence and control, showing great promise during the opening stages. However, a flurry of wickets in the middle overs stalled momentum, and the innings concluded at 9/136, with MCC securing a deserved win.
Despite the result, the day was a celebration of cricket, community, and continuity, made all the more special by Anthony and Steve’s involvement. Anthony’s return highlighted the strength of our alumni network and the pride our former students from all our heritage schools take in staying connected to AKS.
We are grateful to MCC for visiting, and to Anthony Pilkington for his contribution to a day filled with sporting excellence and lasting memories.
